A breathtaking spectacle of delicate katakuri flowers carpeting the landscape, bringing the breath of spring to this snowy region!
The Ankezawa Katakuri Colony, located in Sawauchi, Nishiwaga-cho, Iwate Prefecture, is a beautiful spot heralding the arrival of spring. From late April to early May each year, katakuri flowers bloom profusely, painting the landscape in a vibrant pink. In some years, they bloom alongside Ooyama-zakura (Prunus sargentii) cherry blossoms against the backdrop of the Ou Mountains, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene. A well-maintained walking path winds through the beech forest, offering encounters with various other aspects of nature, including mizubasho (Lysichiton camtschatcense) and kuroyashirouo (a type of salamander). Other katakuri colonies, such as the ones in Ginga no Mori and Mujinaichi, are also located nearby, allowing you to fully enjoy the arrival of spring. Note that the blooming period varies depending on snowmelt conditions, so it's recommended to check the blooming status beforehand.
