Overview

Mount Morigichi is an old volcano located in Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture, standing at an elevation of 1,454.2 meters. It's famed as a treasure trove of alpine plants. The abundance of alpine flora in the alpine zone has earned it a place on the list of "100 Famous Mountains of Flowers" (NHK and Yama to Keikoku-sha selections). In areas like Ichinokoshi, Maedake, and Ishimori on the summit ridge, the remaining snow in spring creates patterns reminiscent of a dairy cow's spots, leading to the local name "Madarabego" (Bego is a dialect word for "cow"). Although not included in the list of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, Mount Morigichi's stunning natural beauty and diverse flora and fauna make it a beloved destination for hikers and tourists alike. Spring brings the thaw and a burst of alpine flowers, painting the mountain in vibrant hues. Summer reveals lush beech and coniferous forests, cooled by refreshing breezes. Autumn showcases breathtaking foliage, transforming the mountain into a fiery canvas of reds and yellows. Winter drapes the mountain in snow, adorned with fantastical icicles creating a magical landscape. Well-maintained trails make Mount Morigichi relatively easy to climb, even for beginners. The summit offers majestic panoramic views, encompassing sprawling farmlands and distant mountain ranges. Plenty of other attractions, such as Morigichi Shrine and Yamantohei, make it worthwhile to spend a whole day exploring. Mount Morigichi offers more than just natural beauty; it also provides a glimpse into the region's history and culture. As a mountain of long-standing religious significance, it's steeped in legends and stories passed down through generations. Atop the mountain sits Morigichi Shrine, revered by locals for centuries. Nearby lies Kanmuri-iwa, a massive rock formation whose unique shape has captured people's imaginations for ages. Mount Morigichi is a captivating mountain where nature and culture intertwine. We strongly encourage you to visit and experience its breathtaking beauty firsthand.
