Komatakyo Gorge is a valley located in Morigoshi, Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture, a prefectural scenic spot with untouched primeval forests. The approximately 6km-long gorge features countless waterfalls and pools, and is sometimes called the last hidden gem of the prefecture. A particular highlight is the "Three-Tiered Waterfall," with a drop of about 20 meters. The powerful sight of the three-tiered torrent crashing against the rocks is truly breathtaking. A walking path is well-maintained from Lake Taihei to the Three-Tiered Waterfall, making it easy to enjoy many waterfalls.
Since ancient times, Mount Taihei has been known as a sacred place where spirits reside, and Komatakyo Gorge was considered its most sacred part. It was revered by *matagi* (traditional hunters) as the "God's Stream," and they avoided approaching it. Therefore, countless waterfalls and giant trees have only recently been discovered. Komatakyo Gorge was officially named in July 1939 (Showa 14).
A sightseeing boat ride from the Taiheiko Green House takes about 30 minutes to reach the Komatakyo boat landing. A 1.8km mountain trail is maintained from the landing, leading to the impressive "Three-Tiered Waterfall," approximately 20 meters high. Along the way, you can find other unique waterfalls such as Yokotaki, Magarigtaki, and Gamabuchi, making it easy to enjoy many waterfalls.
The valleys of Mount Morigoshi can experience rapid water level increases even with light rain. Please check the weather and water level conditions before your visit. There might also be temporary closures due to construction. Please check for accessibility beforehand.
