A tranquil space where history and nature harmonize.
Komyozenji Temple is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple of the Tofuku-ji school located in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Established in 1273 (Bun'ei 10) by Tetsugo Enshin, who also became its founding abbot. The temple gate, bell tower, and karesansui (dry landscape garden) are remarkably majestic and elegant, leaving a lasting impression. Particularly noteworthy is the karesansui garden created in 1957. It comprises two parts: the Butsuko Sekitei garden in the front, featuring a moss-covered courtyard with fifteen stones arranged in the shape of the kanji character for "light" (光); and the Ippeki Kai Garden in the back, where green moss represents continents and islands, and white sand symbolizes water and the ocean, masterfully depicted with curving lines reminiscent of a long riverbank and winding inlets. This garden is designated as a prefectural scenic spot in Fukuoka and offers a tranquil space that draws you into its serene world. It's the perfect place for those seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Komyozenji Temple is located a short distance from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, quietly nestled away. As a result, it sees fewer tourists, allowing you to fully savor the peace and quiet. The temple grounds also preserve historical structures such as the temple gate and bell tower, offering an opportunity to stroll through history. Komyozenji Temple is a must-visit when you explore Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
