Overview
Kanzeon-ji Temple is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, founded during the Heian period. Legend says it was established in 758 (Tenpyohoji 2) by Gyoki. Later, in 819 (Kōnin 10), it was rebuilt by imperial order of Emperor Saga, leading to the development of the present temple complex.
Kanzeon-ji Temple houses numerous precious cultural assets, including a National Treasure bronze bell and important cultural properties—Buddhist statues—from the Kamakura period. The National Treasure bronze bell, from the Nara period, is considered one of the oldest in Japan. The Kamakura period statues include images of Batō Kannon and Fukūkensaku Kannon.
The temple grounds are designated as a National Historic Site, offering a beautiful blend of nature and history. The gardens, also designated as a National Historic Site, are particularly noteworthy, featuring ponds and rock arrangements.
