A breathtaking 55-meter waterfall!
Akiu Otaki Waterfall is located in Akiu-cho, Taihaku-ku, Sendai-shi, Miyagi Prefecture. It plunges 55 meters down, with a width of 6 meters, in the upper reaches of the Natori River, within the Zao Kogen Quasi-National Park and the Nikuko Gorge Prefectural Natural Park. Designated a Place of Scenic Beauty by the country, it's also one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. Its proximity to Akiu Onsen attracts many tourists. A 1.0km path, the 'New Oku-no-Hosomichi Akiu Otaki Panorama Michi' (Akiu Otaki walking trail), has been developed from the Akiu Otaki parking lot on the right bank of the Natori River, via the waterfall viewing platform and the Fudotaki Bridge, to the left bank, offering the closest views of the waterfall's base. Nearby is the Sendai City Akiu Otaki Botanical Garden. In the early part of February during the harsh winter, Akiu Otaki may freeze over. According to legend, in the early Heian period, Jiakudai-shi, while traveling to Risshaku-ji Temple in Yamagata Prefecture, stopped here and enshrined Fudo Myoo (Acala). In 1825 (Bunsei 8), Chisoku-shojo, a local priest, built the Fudo-do Hall and restored the principal image. Fudo-do Hall is part of Saiko-ji Temple, a Shingon sect temple preserving elements of shinbutsu-shugo (the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism). Akiu Otaki has been beloved by many for its magnificent scale and natural beauty. Especially during the autumn foliage season, the surrounding mountains turn shades of red and yellow, creating a stunning contrast with the waterfall, drawing numerous visitors. When visiting Akiu Otaki, we recommend a stroll along the walking path leading to the base of the waterfall. The path is well-maintained, making it easy to navigate, suitable for families with children. From the path, you can not only experience the power of the waterfall but also enjoy the surrounding nature. Akiu Otaki is a recommended sightseeing spot where you can feel the power of nature. We highly encourage a visit.
