Overview

Onuma's Floating Islands are a mystical swamp in Asahi-machi, Yamagata Prefecture, where over 30 large and small floating islands drift. Designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty, the islands create a serene landscape that soothes the soul. This swamp has attracted attention since ancient times, and its mysterious appearance has given rise to many legends and folktales. It is said to have been discovered in 681 AD (Tenmu Emperor, year 9) by En no Gyoja, a mountain ascetic, and later opened by his disciple, Kakudo. The movement of the islands on the lake's surface was reportedly used for fortune-telling. In 739 AD (Tenpyo 11), the monk Gyoki visited and is said to have named 66 of the various sized islands after different regions of Japan. In 1193 AD (Kenkyu 4), Minamoto no Yoritomo rebuilt the Uki-shima Inari Shrine, which subsequently became a place of prayer for the Oe clan, who served as local magistrates. During the Sengoku period (Warring States period), the Mogami clan, who conquered the Oe clan, took the shrine under their protection. Whenever the Mogami clan faced crises, they visited the shrine, making numerous offerings and carrying out temple renovations. After the Mogami clan's downfall in 1622 AD (Genwa 8), Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Edo shogunate, made it a place of prayer and allowed them to use the three-leaf hollyhock crest (Mitsuba-Aoi) as their emblem, thus protecting the shrine. In 1925 (Taisho 14), the site was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty, attracting many tourists. The surrounding area features Uki-shima Inari Shrine and well-maintained walking paths, perfect for those seeking a relaxing experience. The shrine is dedicated to Inari (fox) and Kumano gods and is known as a power spot where wishes come true. The walking paths run along the lakeshore offering close-up views of the floating islands. Enjoy the tranquil scenery and the natural beauty of the islands. Onuma's Floating Islands is a place where you can forget time as you gaze upon the mystical islands floating on the calm lake surface. It's a recommended sightseeing spot for those seeking to relax while experiencing the powerful beauty of nature.
