A majestic lake where magnificent nature and history intertwine!
Lake Suwa is a lake with a circumference of approximately 16km, located in the central part of Nagano Prefecture. Situated at an elevation of 759m, it's surrounded by mountains, creating a breathtaking natural landscape. Since ancient times, it has been revered as a sacred place, home to the Suwa Taisha Shrine, one of Japan's oldest shrines, its history recorded even in the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters). Lake Suwa has been deeply intertwined with the lives of the people, serving as both a sacred site and a vital part of their daily lives. In summer, Lake Suwa hosts the "Suwa Lake Festival Fireworks Display," attracting countless tourists. Held annually on August 15th, approximately 20,000 fireworks illuminate the lake, creating a truly spectacular sight. Spring brings a vibrant display of cherry blossoms along the lakeshore, offering stunning views. Cherry blossoms typically bloom from mid- to late April. The lakeshore boasts cherry blossom avenues, painting the lake surface in shades of pink. Winter sometimes witnesses the "Omiwatari" phenomenon, where the ice cracks and piles up. Omiwatari occurs when Lake Suwa completely freezes over, and the ice reaches a certain thickness. Daytime temperature rises cause the ice to soften, while the temperature drop at night causes the ice to expand, exceeding the lake's surface area. This results in loud cracking sounds as fissures appear and ice piles up. Omiwatari is deeply associated with the Suwa Taisha Shrine and has long been viewed with awe by the local people. Lake Suwa is a captivating tourist destination, a fusion of nature, history, and culture. It offers a variety of ways to enjoy yourself, whether it's immersing yourself in the majestic natural scenery, exploring its rich history, or experiencing its unique culture. Visit Lake Suwa and experience its charm for yourself.
