Hotaka Shrine, located in Hotaka, Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, has been a center of faith since ancient times as one of the three great shrines of Shinano Province. The main shrine (Honmiya) is in Hotaka, Azumino City, while the inner shrine (Okumiya) is located by Myojin Pond in Kamikochi, Matsumoto City, and the peak shrine (Ryogū) sits atop Okuhotaka-dake in the Northern Alps. It's commonly known as the "Guardian Shrine of the Japanese Alps." The enshrined deities are: Hotakami-no-Mikoto (central hall), Watatsumi-no-Mikoto (left hall), and Ninigi-no-Mikoto (right hall). Watatsumi-no-Mikoto is the sea god and the ancestral deity of the Azumi clan. Hotakami-no-Mikoto is the father of Yamahiko, the husband of Toyotama-hime, and the son of Watatsumi-no-Mikoto. Ninigi-no-Mikoto is the god of the descent of the Heavenly Ancestor from Hyuga's three generations. Hotaka Shrine is said to offer various blessings, including traffic safety, maritime safety, bountiful fishing, warding off evil, and matchmaking. Traffic safety blessings are particularly renowned, drawing many visitors seeking prayers for safe travel. The shrine grounds also feature a sacred pond, where large carp swim gracefully, creating a breathtaking sight. The annual autumn festival (Gosen-sai) held on September 27th is particularly famous.
