Otoike Spring Group is a group of springs located in Asono, Shoain-machi, Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. Emerging from Otoike Pond (elevation 850m) on the north side of Kurodake mountain (elevation 1,586m) on the eastern foothills of the Kuju mountain range, it is one of the sources of the Aso-no River in the Oita River system. Groundwater from Kurodake takes months, or even over a year, to percolate through the layers of earth before emerging, resulting in water containing a moderate amount of minerals such as calcium. It also contains trace amounts of carbon dioxide, giving it its characteristic smooth, soft taste. It has long been used locally for drinking and irrigation, and is now also sold as bottled mineral water. Otoike Spring Group is located within the Aso-Kuju National Park, and walking trails are available in the surrounding area. Approximately 2km east of Otoike Spring Group is Shirasu-kousen, known for its natural carbonated water. When visiting Otoike Spring Group, we recommend taking a stroll along the trails to enjoy the abundant nature and clear water, tasting the spring water, and appreciating the surrounding scenery. The beautiful views, with the majestic Kuju mountain range as a backdrop, will surely soothe your soul.
