Ofunato Bay

Overview

Ofunato Bay, located in southeastern Iwate Prefecture, is characterized by its stunning ria coastline. Within the bay lies Ofunato Port, a major fishing port where you can savor the freshest seafood. At the mouth of the bay, on the Mesaki Peninsula, lies Goishi Coast, a breathtaking expanse of black stones resembling go stones, which have paved the coast. Its beauty has earned Goishi Coast a place among Japan's Top 100 Beaches. Goishi Coast stretches for approximately 3 kilometers, offering diverse scenery including Anatooiso (Ana-too-i-so), Kinchakuiwa (Kin-cha-ku-i-wa), Kaminariiwa (Ka-mi-na-ri-i-wa) and Ranbouya (Ran-bou-ya), Chiyoshima Island, Goishi Cape, Hebisubama Beach, and Goishihama Beach. Scattered around Ofunato Bay are historical structures. For instance, the Ofunato City Museum allows visitors to delve into the area's history and culture. Ofunato Castle, a former coastal defense base established by the Morioka clan, once stood overlooking the bay. Today, its remains have been developed into a castle ruins park, preserving a hint of its past glory.
