Overview

Goishi Coast, in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture, is a breathtaking approximately 6km coastline distinguished by its flat, go-stone-like pebbles. It's a part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park, showcasing the dramatic beauty of the ria coast and its unique pebble beach. The name is believed to originate from the go-ishi-shaped gravel smoothed by the powerful waves (Goishihama). A scenic boardwalk and various observation decks provide access to stunning rock formations such as 'Anatsuki-iso,' 'Raiwa,' and 'Ranbo-dani.' The boardwalk winds through a pine forest, offering a delightful stroll amid seasonal wildflowers. Numerous observation points provide spectacular panoramic views. Near Ranbo-dani, you can see Ayasato-saki on the opposite shore, dramatic cliffs, and a strait. From Goishi-misaki, on a clear day, you can even see Hirota Peninsula in Rikuchū-Takata City and, further afield, Kinpusan in Miyagi Prefecture. Goishi Coast is a cherished symbol of Ofunato City, beloved by locals and increasingly popular with tourists. When visiting Goishi Coast, we highly recommend a walk along the boardwalk to fully appreciate the magnificence of nature. Don't miss the breathtaking views from the observation points!
