Overview

Geibikei Gorge, located in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, on the Iwai River, is a nationally designated place of scenic beauty. This approximately 2km-long gorge features towering, strangely shaped rocks and boasts beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. The cherry blossoms in spring, the verdant greenery in summer, and the vibrant autumn foliage are especially renowned for their breathtaking beauty. Spring's cherry blossoms paint the entire gorge in pink, creating a fantastical landscape that feels like a dream. Summer's greenery shines under the sunlight, presenting a vibrant and life-filled scene. Autumn's foliage bursts with fiery reds and yellows, conveying a majestic and powerful beauty. A boat ride is the best way to fully experience the charm of Geibikei Gorge. The gorge's beauty, viewed from a slowly drifting boat, is truly exceptional. The boat tour takes you to "Oobuchi," where approximately 100-meter-high rock walls tower over you, and "Hyakujoujiki," a stretch of uniquely shaped rocks, allowing you to experience the grandeur of the gorge. The boatman's witty commentary adds another layer of enjoyment to the trip. A well-maintained walking path also runs along the gorge, allowing visitors to enjoy nature at their own pace. The path offers perspectives unavailable from the boat ride. Several rest areas are located along the path, perfect for enjoying tea and light snacks while taking in the scenery. Geibikei Gorge is a fascinating tourist spot where you can experience both majestic nature and a rich history. We highly recommend a visit!
