A mystical place where a precious primeval forest of boxwood trees, designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan, unfolds.
Mount Koshozan is an 859.5-meter-high mountain located in central Fukuoka Prefecture, on the border between Asakura City and Kama City. On Mount Koshozan lies the "Koshozan Tsuge Primeval Forest," designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan. This primeval forest is formed by a dense concentration of boxwood trees (Tsuge), hundreds of years old, creating a lush green forest. Boxwood (Tsuge) is an evergreen tree belonging to the Aquifoliaceae family and is endemic to Japan. The Koshozan Tsuge Primeval Forest spreads over an area of approximately 10 hectares, ranging in elevation from 500 to 800 meters. Boxwood has long been used as a material for combs and seals. Its hard, dense, and easily workable nature has also made it a popular material for wood carvings. The Koshozan Tsuge Primeval Forest attracts many visitors due to its historical significance and natural beauty. Access to Mount Koshozan is approximately 20 minutes by bus from Amagi Station on the Amagi Railway, or about 25 minutes from the Amagi IC on the Oita Expressway. The Koshozan Tsuge Primeval Forest is an ideal location for nature walks and hiking. Take your time walking through the forest, immersing yourself in the experience through your five senses – the boxwood trees, birdsong, and the gentle rustling of the wind. The Koshozan Tsuge Primeval Forest is a treasure trove of nature. We highly recommend a visit.
