Onojo Castle Ruins, located in Onojo City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is an ancient mountain castle believed to have been built in 658 AD. As the largest ancient mountain castle in Fukuoka Prefecture, it's designated as a national historic site. Onojo Castle was built as a defensive base for Chikushi Kokufu, the political center of Kyushu at the time. The castle ruins cover a vast area of approximately 1km east-west and 800m north-south, with remnants of castle walls, moats, and gate sites. From the summit, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Fukuoka city and the distant mountains. Within the castle grounds, you'll find reconstructed buildings depicting the era and a museum where you can learn about the castle's history.
