Overview

Mikawa's Shogun-sugi is a giant cedar tree in Aga-machi, Niigata Prefecture, approximately 1400 years old. Designated as a national natural monument, it boasts a trunk circumference of 19.31 meters and a height of about 40 meters. Known as the largest cedar tree in Japan, its imposing presence captivates visitors. A legend tells of villagers who once planned to cut down this cedar to build a ship, only to have their efforts thwarted when the felled tree mysteriously sank into the ground overnight. This speaks volumes about the reverence with which this sacred tree has been regarded. The surrounding area features informational signs detailing the history and legends of Shogun-sugi, as well as rest areas and parking. Nearby is the Mikawa roadside station, offering locally produced goods and fresh farm produce. Mikawa's Shogun-sugi offers a precious opportunity to feel the power of nature and reflect on history.
