The Ichishima Residence, located in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture, is the former home of the Ichishima family, wealthy farmers who significantly contributed to the land reclamation of Fukushimagata Pond and the development of the Kamo Plain during the early Edo period. The Ichishima family became one of the most prosperous farming families in the Hokuriku region, once owning approximately 1,800 cho (approximately 720 hectares) of land. The current Ichishima Residence was relocated to its present site in the early Meiji period by the seventh generation head of the family, Tokujirou (Shigetsuki), after their previous home in Mizuhara burned down during the Boshin War. The Ichishima Residence boasts an impressive 8,000 tsubo (approximately 26,400 square meters) site and 600 tsubo (approximately 1,980 square meters) of floor space. While the buildings are simple, they exude elegance, offering a glimpse into the lives of wealthy farmers of the time. Twelve structures, including the main gate, entrance hall, Sakutsugeku, Nanzan-tei, Shorai-an, Suigetsu-an, and the preaching hall, are designated as tangible cultural properties of Niigata Prefecture. The strolling garden surrounding the residence, "Shigetsuen," is a masterpiece of landscape gardening, harmoniously blending with the natural surroundings. It offers a serene and wild atmosphere. The garden features seasonal plants, offering ever-changing beauty throughout the year. A stone monument with a poem is also located in the garden, adding to the tranquility, with trees surrounding the pond displaying their seasonal charm. The Ichishima Residence is a must-see for those seeking a blend of history, culture, and nature. Enjoy a relaxing time exploring the lifestyle of wealthy farmers, admiring the architectural style of the era, and experiencing the stunning beauty of the garden.
