Overview

Yagihanan is a scenic spot in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, featuring dramatic cliffs over 200 meters high. The Igarashi River flows by, and an auto-campsite is situated on the opposite bank, making it a popular area to enjoy nature. Yagihanan is located at the heart of a lava dome formed by submarine volcanic activity approximately 6 million years ago. Over the millennia, it has been shaped by wind and rain into its current rugged form. It has long been known as a peregrine falcon habitat, and in 1965, it was designated a Niigata Prefecture Natural Monument as a peregrine falcon breeding ground. While the falcons disappeared for a time, they reappeared in 1989 and continue to inhabit the cliffs of Yagihanan. At the foot of Yagihanan sits Yagi Shrine, a long-standing guardian of the area. The shrine harmonizes with the landscape of Yagihanan, adding to the sense of history. Yagihanan is a captivating spot where nature, history, and culture converge. Enjoy hiking while taking in the magnificent views, relax in an onsen with a view, or spend time camping—the possibilities are endless. Come experience the charm of Yagihanan for yourself!
