Sendai Mediatheque is a public facility located in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, which opened in 2001. Designed by architect Toyo Ito, it has received international acclaim for its unique structure and design.
This facility is characterized by its distinctive structure, supported by only six floors and 13 steel columns. Its light, airy form, reminiscent of swaying seaweed, coupled with its glass exterior, creates a feeling of openness and spaciousness. The interior is open-plan, bathed in natural light.
Sendai Mediatheque houses the Sendai City Library, galleries, event spaces, studios, and more. The library offers books, magazines, and visual materials. Galleries host exhibitions of contemporary art, photography, design, and more. Event spaces hold lectures, concerts, film screenings, and other events.
There's also a rooftop observation deck offering panoramic views of Sendai. You can even see the keyaki (zelkova) trees lining Jozenji-dori Street, allowing you to feel a connection with nature despite being in the heart of the city.
Sendai Mediatheque is a leading Sendai facility where architecture, culture, and nature converge. Be sure to visit!
