Witness the majestic natural artistry of a breathtaking coastline on the Sea of Japan.
Sotomen is a coastal scenic area located on the Utsumi Peninsula in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. Stretching 6 kilometers, the area boasts dramatic archways, waterfalls, and cliffs. Designated a place of scenic beauty by the national government, its magnificent scenery has captivated many. Historically, it was written as "Sotomen" (ソトメン) and pronounced "Sotomen", meaning "outer face" or "back face", referring to its location facing the outside of Obama Bay. The current "Sotomen" (蘇洞門) spelling appeared in Edo period literature, though its origin remains unclear. Sotomen offers numerous highlights. The two archways, known as Oomon (Great Gate) and Komon (Small Gate), are particularly impressive, towering over 20 meters high. A boat trip through these arches offers a truly unforgettable experience. Unique rock formations such as Meotoiwa (Couple Rocks), Shishiiwa (Lion Rock), and Karafunejima (Chinese Ship Island) add to the spectacle, each with its own captivating legend. For instance, Meotoiwa is cherished locally as a symbol of marital harmony. Shishiiwa, resembling a lion's face, earned its name from its shape. Karafunejima is said to be where a Chinese ship ran aground long ago. Sotomen is a remarkable place to experience the raw power and beauty of nature.
