A historically romantic spot where you can find the remaining stone walls of a castle built by Oda Nobusumi.
Located approximately 150m southeast of JR Omi-Takashima Station, the Ōgō Castle ruins are the remains of a castle built during the Azuchi-Momoyama period by Oda Nobusumi. A small, elevated wooded area surrounded by stone walls marks the site of the former keep. Shops and temples were relocated to create a castle town. The outer moat was Otomegaike Pond, an inner lake of Lake Biwa, and the castle was also known as "Kōko Castle" as a water castle. During the Edo period, Bunbu Mitsunobu became the lord, and the area served as a jinya until the Meiji Restoration under the 12th lord, Mitsunori. The Ōgō Castle ruins are recommended not only for history buffs but also for those seeking a tranquil natural environment. You can imagine the bustling castle town of the past while gazing at the stone walls, or spend some quiet time by Otomegaike Pond. Nearby, you'll also find the Takashima City History Museum and the Takashima City Tourism Association, offering further opportunities to explore the local history and culture. When visiting Takashima City, be sure to visit the Ōgō Castle ruins.
