Witness the majestic beauty of seven waterfalls! A breathtaking scenic spot designated as a National Natural Monument.
Tada no Nanatsugama is a scenic spot designated as a National Natural Monument and Place of Scenic Beauty, nestled deep in the mountains of Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture. Seven breathtaking waterfalls dot the Kamagawa River, which flows down from the Myōkō mountain range. Their grandeur is truly awe-inspiring. Each of the seven waterfalls, from No. 1 to No. 7, displays a unique and captivating character. Another highlight is the rare geological formation: the right bank exhibits a cross-section of rock strata, while the left bank boasts a steep, vertical layer. This unique landscape is believed to have been formed by volcanic activity long ago and has taken millennia to reach its current form. Well-maintained walking trails wind along the stream, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the magnificent natural scenery. While a landslide in 1995 destroyed the first waterfall, a pioneering artificial-rock dam was constructed, restoring the waterfall to a state closely resembling its original form. This dam, designed with environmental sensitivity, ensures safety without compromising the scenic beauty. Legend adds to the mystique of Nanatsugama. A tale speaks of a man who broke a promise to the goddess Benzaiten, casting his net a second time, angering the serpent god residing in the waterfall pools and leading to his demise. This legend further enhances the mystical atmosphere. Experience the raw power of nature at Tada no Nanatsugama—a captivating travel destination. We highly recommend a visit.
