Ryugakubo is a spring-fed pond in Tsunan-machi, Niigata Prefecture, chosen as one of the Ministry of the Environment's 100 Best Waters of Japan.
Located in a designated heavy snowfall area, its water source is the meltwater from the Akisan-go area, and groundwater from Myoko and Choko mountains.
Numerous underground springs emerge from the terraces of the Shinano River, and Ryugakubo sits on a terrace at an altitude of approximately 450 meters.
The area is largely forested, boasting a rich natural environment.
Ryugakubo is a popular sightseeing spot, known for its beautiful scenery and pure water.
The spring water has been cherished by local residents as a source of daily life for generations.
The water is soft water with a moderate mineral content and low hardness. The water temperature remains consistently between 7 and 8 degrees Celsius throughout the year, providing a refreshing coolness even in summer.
Walking paths are maintained around Ryugakubo, making it perfect for a stroll.
Note that Ryujin no Yakata, a nearby day-trip onsen facility, closed in September 2023.
When visiting Ryugakubo, be sure to fully enjoy the abundant nature and taste the pristine water.
