The Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel offers a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of Kiyotsukyo Gorge, one of Japan's three great gorges. The entire tunnel is an art space, inviting you into a fantastical world of light and shadow.
The Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel is a 750-meter-long pedestrian-only tunnel located in Kiyotsukyo Gorge, Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture. Opened in 1996, this tunnel provides safe access to the stunning gorge scenery, previously only viewable via a walking path. Three observation decks within the tunnel offer varied perspectives of the gorge's beauty. The "Panorama Station" at the tunnel's end is a popular spot, boasting a magnificent 180-degree panoramic view of the gorge. The majestic scenery—the rugged cliffs, lush greenery, and the flowing Kiyotsugawa River—is truly captivating. In 2018, coinciding with the 7th Echigo-Tsumari Triennale, the entire tunnel was redesigned by Chinese artist Ma Yansong (MAD Architects). Stainless steel sheets adorn the tunnel walls, reflecting light to create a magical atmosphere. The floor, featuring pools of water from the stream, mirrors the gorge's scenery. The interplay of light and shadow creates a dreamlike space, reminiscent of an art museum. The Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel is a truly exceptional place where nature and art seamlessly blend. Experience the fusion of majestic nature and artistic expression, enjoying the ever-changing scenery throughout the seasons.
