A mountain pass at an elevation of 1,065 meters in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. From late summer to autumn, it's a breathtaking spot to witness 'taki-gumo' – a sea of clouds cascading down the mountainside like a waterfall at sunrise.
Edorigi Pass is a mountain pass at an elevation of 1,065 meters located in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, along National Route 352. It was originally opened as a forest road due to the valuable timber resources of Ginsantai. Even today, the sections of road before and after the pass are extremely narrow with continuous sharp curves, making it impassable for large vehicles except for buses and minibuses. It's completely closed during the winter (generally December to May) due to snow accumulation. However, the Okutadami Silver Line now runs parallel, offering a bypass to Ginsantai via tunnels. The Silver Line allows two-way traffic along its entire length and is open all day during the season, making it the main route. Despite this, many cars and motorcycles still use Edorigi Pass because of its proximity to trailheads leading to surrounding mountains, such as Echigo-Komagatake, and because the Silver Line prohibits the passage of motorcycles, light vehicles, and pedestrians. The main attraction of Edorigi Pass is the 'taki-gumo' (waterfall clouds) visible from late summer to around October. This mesmerizing sight of a sea of clouds cascading down the mountainside like a waterfall at sunrise captivates many visitors. Viewpoints are available near the parking lot, and bus tours are offered during the autumn season, making it easy to enjoy the taki-gumo. A hill climb race is also held annually in the summer, starting from Oyu Onsen at the foot of the pass and finishing at the top, covering 14km with a 750m elevation gain. Experience the breathtaking scenery and fantastical waterfall clouds at the naturally beautiful Edorigi Pass.
