Overview

Sesshoseki is a lava formation in Nasu-machi, Tochigi Prefecture, known for its legend of the nine-tailed fox. It was once feared as a place where volcanic gases erupted, killing birds and animals. Even today, a sulfurous scent lingers, creating a unique atmosphere. The legend of Sesshoseki dates back to the Heian period. It tells the story of Tamamo no Mae, a woman favored by Emperor Toba, who was actually a nine-tailed fox in disguise. Tamamo no Mae captivated the Emperor with her beauty and intelligence, but her true nature was revealed by the onmyoji Abe no Yasunari. She fled to the eastern provinces and transformed into a stone in Nasu, from which she emitted poisonous gas, tormenting the people. This stone became known as "Sesshoseki" (Killing Stone), and many feared it. However, during the Edo period, a Buddhist priest named Gen'o is said to have shattered the stone, sealing its toxicity. Today, Sesshoseki is a well-maintained tourist spot. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere, imbued with the scent of sulfur, while contemplating the legend of the nine-tailed fox. However, traces of volcanic gas still linger in the vicinity of Sesshoseki, so caution is advised, especially for young children and those with pets. Sesshoseki is a mystical place where the power of nature and human imagination intertwine. Visit and experience the atmosphere for yourself.
