Overview

Tsurugajo Castle is the symbol of Aizu-Wakamatsu City and served as the residence of the Aizu clan, the Matsudaira family, for approximately 200 years. Originally built in the 14th century, the castle underwent several renovations before taking on its present form. It was the site of fierce battles during the Boshin War and is also known for the tragic story of the Byakkotai (White Tiger Corps). The current keep was reconstructed in 1965 to replicate its original appearance. Its majestic presence stands watch over the city of Aizu-Wakamatsu. From the keep, visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the city. The castle also features a museum where you can learn about the history and culture of Aizu, as well as a beautiful Japanese garden, offering a wealth of attractions. Surrounding the castle are historical structures and sites, including the mausoleum of the Matsudaira family and the Byakkotai monument. Exploring these historical sites allows for a deeper understanding of Aizu's history and culture. Tsurugajo Castle is a highlight of Aizu-Wakamatsu tourism and a popular destination for many visitors.
