Overview

Nasu Jinja Shrine, located in Minamikanmaru, Otawara City, Tochigi Prefecture, is dedicated to Emperor Ojin. Traditionally said to have been established during the reign of Emperor Nintoku, it boasts a rich history. It was once the guardian shrine of the Ozeki clan, the rulers of Kurobane Castle, and was renamed Nasu Jinja Shrine in 1873. The highlight of Nasu Jinja Shrine is its main shrine building (honden) and gate (roumon), both designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The main shrine building, constructed in the early Edo period, is a magnificent example of San-ken-sha Nagare-zukuri architectural style with a copper-tiled roof. The gate, also built around the same time, is a three-bay, single-door gate with an irimoya-style roof and copper covering, harmonizing beautifully with the main shrine building. The shrine grounds are designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty within the "Oku no Hosomichi" landscape, offering beautiful seasonal views. Spring brings a breathtaking display of cherry blossoms, while autumn showcases stunning autumn foliage. Nasu Jinja Shrine is also known as a place associated with Nasu no Yoichi, a celebrated warrior from the Genpei War. The Nasu no Yoichi Museum allows visitors to learn about his legendary exploits. The legend of his incredible archery skills continues to be told. Nasu Jinja Shrine is a beloved power spot where visitors can connect with history and nature. The serene atmosphere of the shrine buildings, the beauty of each season, and the legend of Nasu no Yoichi all evoke a sense of ancient romance.
