Overview

Iwamura-cho Hon-dori, located in the heart of Iwamura-cho, Ena City, Gifu Prefecture, is a historic area designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1998. Having flourished as the castle town of the Iwamura domain during the Edo period, its streetscape vividly retains the atmosphere of that time, making you feel as if you've stepped back in time. Iwamura-cho Hon-dori is a long, narrow district stretching approximately 1.3km east-west. East of the Masugata (a type of street intersection) near the center was the merchant district of the old castle town. While most Edo-period buildings have been modified, many originally featured low second-story structures known as "zukushi-nijūkai." The lots are generally long and narrow, oriented north-south, with gable roofs and flush entrances. Latticework, projecting latticework, and tiled roofs are common features. Some buildings feature namako-kabe (plaster walls with a unique texture) or musha-mado (slit windows characteristic of defensive architecture). The area is unique in that it presents a mix of houses from the early Edo period to the present day. West of the Masugata is an area that primarily formed after the Meiji Restoration. The houses here are taller, with second stories originally intended as living spaces. Iwamura-cho Hon-dori contains many valuable historical sites offering glimpses into the lives of people in the past. The Kimura residence and Tosaya, both open to the public, are recommended spots to experience the atmosphere of merchant houses and samurai residences of the time. You might also consider visiting Iwamura Castle ruins and the Iwamura Historical Museum. The castle ruins were once the site of Iwamura Castle, and from the former keep site, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Iwamura-cho and the surrounding mountains. The Iwamura Historical Museum provides insights into the history and culture of Iwamura-cho. Iwamura-cho Hon-dori is a captivating area where you can immerse yourself in history and culture. Come and experience the life and culture of the Edo period!
