The Former Ota Waki-honjin Hayashi Family Residence, located in Ota Honmachi, Minokamo City, Gifu Prefecture, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. It's the only remaining example of a secondary inn (waki-honjin) from the Edo period, and is known as a valuable building that conveys the lifestyle and journeys of the time. While the main house is privately owned and not open to the public, the retired family's dwelling is open for free.
The retired family's dwelling, built in the late Edo period architectural style, offers a glimpse into the lives of wealthy farmers of that era. A striking feature is the impressive 'udatsu' (fire walls) on both ends of the gable roof, symbolizing the family's authority and status. The 'udatsu' also served as a crucial fire prevention measure.
