Magome-juku is a post town located in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, and was the 43rd post town on the Nakasendo. During the Edo period, it thrived as a bustling hub for travelers during the sankin-kotai system (alternate attendance system of feudal lords). Even today, its cobblestone streets and traditional townscape remain, designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
The charm of Magome-juku lies in its historical atmosphere. Walking along the cobblestone streets feels like stepping back in time. Souvenir shops and restaurants line the streets, allowing you to enjoy shopping and dining during your stroll. Magome-juku's signature Gohei-mochi (rice cakes) and soba noodles are must-tries.
Magome-juku is also famous as the birthplace of the renowned writer Shimazaki Toson. The Toson Memorial Museum displays materials and works related to him. Toson wrote "Before Dawn," a novel set in Magome-juku, transmitting the town's history and culture to future generations.
Magome-juku is recommended for history buffs and those seeking a relaxing getaway. Surrounded by beautiful nature, it provides a refreshing experience for body and mind. Visit Magome-juku and experience the atmosphere of the Edo period.
