Jinda Koji, where the townscape of the Edo period remains vividly, is a tranquil and atmospheric place. The stone walls of the samurai residences, the arrow bamboo hedges, and the waterways are beautiful, offering a feeling of stepping back in time.
Jinda Koji is an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings located in Kunimi-cho, Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Once a prosperous castle town of the Jinda Nabeshima family, it still vividly retains the atmosphere of that time, with the stone walls of samurai residences, arrow bamboo hedges, and waterways. The quiet and elegant atmosphere offers visitors a sense of peace. In particular, the former Nabeshima residence, designated as an Important Cultural Property, allows visitors to feel its history and grandeur. The former Nabeshima residence was built on the site of the former Jinda domain's official residence after the first lord of Saga Domain, Nabeshima Katsushige, granted four villages in Takai County, including this area, to his vassal and uncle, Nabeshima Nobufusa, establishing the Jinda territory of Saga Domain. Subsequently, during the Genroku era, under the fourth lord Nabeshima Takatoshi, the present Jinda Koji was developed east of Tsurugame Castle, creating the samurai residence area. The former Nabeshima residence consists of a long gate, main house, retirement building, and a study, offering a glimpse into the lifestyles of the time. The karesansui (dry landscape) garden extends to the second bailey of Tsurugame Castle, and on clear days, offers views of Mount Unzen Fugen and Kumamoto Prefecture across the water. When exploring Jinda Koji, take your time to feel the lifestyle and culture of the time. It will surely be an unforgettable memory.
