A precious building, a wealthy merchant's mansion from the late Edo period, preserved in its original state.
The Nishioka Residence is a historically significant building designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, located in Shiota-cho, Ureshino City, Saga Prefecture. It was the home of the Nishioka family, wealthy merchants who operated a forwarding agency in Shiota-cho. Completed in 1855, during the late Edo period, the residence provides a glimpse into the lives of wealthy merchants of that era. The Nishioka Residence boasts an impressive structure reflecting the status of the merchant family. The street-facing section is designed to open completely. A notable feature is the "tsuri oodo" (hanging sliding doors) at the entrance, which maximize the opening between the earth floor and the shop area. Visiting the Nishioka Residence allows you to imagine the lives of wealthy merchants of the time and experience the history of Shiota-tsu. The area also boasts other historical buildings, including the former Kobayashi Residence (also an Important Cultural Property of Japan), making it an ideal location for a historical walking tour.
