Take a stroll through the charming streetscapes that preserve the best of old Japan!
Kashima City Hama Shojuku-cho Hama Kaneya-cho is an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings located in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture. Part of the former Hizenhama-juku post town on the Tara Kaido (road), this approximately 2.0-hectare area features a dense concentration of thatched-roof and tiled-roof machiya built from the late Edo to early modern periods. As many fishermen still live here, it's known as an area where you can feel the history and traditions. Hizenhama-juku once thrived with many merchants coming and going. Today, the remaining thatched and tiled machiya create a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Many historically significant buildings remain within the preservation district, including the three thatched-roof houses in Minami Funatsu (former Nakamura, Nakajima, and Ikeda residences), the former Hashimoto residence, the former Tsutsui residence, the I Saburo Shrine, and Joritsu-ji Temple. Explore these buildings, imagine the bustling past, and reflect on history. Since many fishermen still live here, you can also experience the unique culture of a fishing town. Savor fresh seafood and chat with the fishermen to deepen your appreciation of the area. Kashima City Hama Shojuku-cho Hama Kaneya-cho Traditional Buildings Preservation District offers a precious opportunity to feel like you've stepped back in time. Enjoy a leisurely stroll while immersing yourself in the history and tradition.
