Toyohashi Christ Orthodox Church

Overview

The Toyohashi Christ Orthodox Church, belonging to the Orthodox Church in Japan, possesses a cathedral designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It was built in 1913 (Taishō 2) to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the ordination of the first priest in charge, Father Matofei Kageta. Designed based on reference diagrams of Christ Orthodox cathedrals in the possession of Archbishop Saint Nikolai, the construction was undertaken by Nakagami-gumi, a local construction company. Built with clapboard siding and copper-plated corrugated roofing, the church interior is adorned with beautiful stained glass and icon paintings. A particular highlight is the iconostasis (icon screen) brought from Russia, boasting exquisite carvings and vibrant colors. Also on display are icons painted by Russian prisoners of war during wartime, offering a poignant glimpse into history and faith.
