Overview

Daijuji Temple, located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, is a Rinzai sect Myoshin-ji school temple renowned as the family temple of Ieyasu Tokugawa's mother, Uda no Kata. Ieyasu's father, Hirotada Matsudaira, was a member of the Matsudaira clan who constructed Okazaki Castle. Ieyasu was born to Hirotada and Uda no Kata. Ieyasu spent his early childhood at Okazaki Castle before eventually unifying Japan. Uda no Kata held deep faith in Daijuji Temple, and Ieyasu is also said to have held a special affection for it. As a temple with strong ties to Ieyasu, Daijuji Temple holds significant historical importance. The temple grounds are filled with highlights, including a National Treasure pagoda and the Daiojo hall, designated an Important Cultural Property. The pagoda, built in 1535, boasts a unique structure with a square first floor and a circular second floor. The Daiojo hall is famous for its stunning wall paintings by Tameyuki Reizen (Okada Tameyuki). Daijuji Temple also features beautiful gardens that change with the seasons. From cherry blossoms in spring to verdant greenery in summer and vibrant autumn leaves, the temple offers beautiful scenery throughout the year. Furthermore, the "Vista Line," offering a view of Okazaki Castle from Daijuji Temple, is said to have been created in the Edo period by Iemitsu so he could gaze upon his grandfather's birthplace. Daijuji Temple is a precious place where you can experience history and culture. When visiting Daijuji Temple, be sure to take your time exploring the pagoda, Daiojo hall, and gardens. Extending your trip to Okazaki Castle to enjoy the view from the Vista Line is also highly recommended. A visit to Daijuji Temple promises an unforgettable journey steeped in history and culture.
