Overview

Gan Tate Kyo, located in Ochiai, Kosaka-cho, Gero-shi, Gifu Prefecture, is a magnificent landscape created by a massive eruption of Mount Ontake. Approximately 54,000 years ago, lava flowing from Mount Ontake cooled and solidified, forming columnar joints that created a gigantic cliff face, 72m high and 120m wide. The sight of these columns, each tens of centimeters in diameter, arranged in a regular pattern, is awe-inspiring and truly showcases the power of nature. The charm of Gan Tate Kyo extends beyond its immense scale. The area features the Mittsu-taki waterfall walking trail, offering stunning views of the gorge. The roaring sound of the cascading water, the lush greenery, and the crisp, clean air provide a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
