Goryu Sakura is a single cherry blossom tree located in Ichinomiya-cho, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Legend says it received its name because its shape resembles a dragon lying on the ground. Over 1100 years old, this ancient tree is designated as a national natural monument. It was formerly known as "the Great Cherry Blossom Tree of Daidoji Temple" but was renamed Goryu Sakura in 1931 (Showa 6) by the temple's priest, Dosin. Goryu Sakura is an Edohigan cherry blossom variety, approximately 20 meters tall, with a branch spread of about 30 meters, and a trunk circumference of about 7.3 meters. Its majestic presence is truly awe-inspiring. A cherry blossom festival is held every year in mid-April, attracting large crowds. During the festival, nighttime illuminations transform the tree, offering a magical nighttime view quite different from its daytime appearance. Its proximity to JR Takayama Line Hida-Ichinomiya Station allows for viewing from the train. Goryu Sakura is a symbolic landmark of Ichinomiya-cho, Takayama City, beloved by many.
