The Enoshima Escar (uphill only) is located within the shrine grounds, providing convenient access between the Hetsumiya and Nakatsumiya shrines.
Enoshima Shrine, located on Enoshima Island in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, is counted among Japan's Three Great Benzaiten Shrines. Traditionally founded in 552 AD (during the reign of Emperor Kinmei), it boasts a long and storied history. Enoshima Island has been revered as a sacred island since ancient times. The shrine grounds contain three shrine buildings: Okutsu-miya, Nakatsu-miya, and Heta-tsumiya, each dedicated to a different deity. Okutsu-miya enshrines Takirihime-no-mikoto, Nakatsu-miya enshrines Ichikishimahime-no-mikoto, and Heta-tsumiya enshrines Tatzutsuhime-no-mikoto. Each of the three shrine buildings exhibits a distinct architectural style, reflecting their historical significance. Enoshima Shrine also boasts a stunning location overlooking the sea. The view of Mount Fuji and Sagami Bay, especially from Heta-tsumiya, is breathtaking. While known for enshrining Benzaiten, the goddess of arts, music, scholarship, and wealth, Enoshima Shrine is believed to grant wishes related to matchmaking, good fortune, health, and safe sea voyages. Famous as a power spot, it attracts many worshippers. Enoshima Island itself offers abundant natural beauty and opportunities for activities such as swimming, fishing, and cycling. Enoshima Shrine and Enoshima Island together are a captivating tourist destination where history and nature harmoniously coexist.
