Suzaki Jinja Shrine is located in Suzaki, Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture, and is known as the primary shrine of Awa Province. Its founding dates back to before the Heian period, though precise records are lacking. During the Kamakura period, it's said that Minamoto no Yoritomo, while in exile in Awa, prayed for victory at this shrine. After his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama, he fled Kamakura and sought refuge in Awa, where he is said to have vowed to rise again at this shrine. As a result, many people still visit to pray for protection from misfortune and good fortune. The approach to Suzaki Jinja Shrine involves a challenging climb up steep stone steps. However, the breathtaking panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean that awaits is truly awe-inspiring. Located at the southernmost tip of the Boso Peninsula, the shrine also offers the enjoyment of magnificent natural surroundings. Within the shrine grounds lies a well known as the "Yajiri no Ido" (Arrowhead Well), associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo. Legend has it that when Yoritomo landed in Awa, water sprang forth when he struck the ground with an arrowhead. Suzaki Jinja Shrine captivates many tourists as a power spot where they can experience both history and nature.
