The Kikkawa Historical Museum, located in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is a museum dedicated to the history and culture of the Kikkawa family, a prominent clan tracing its roots back to the Sengoku period (Warring States period). The Kikkawa family served as retainers of the Mori clan, ruling over a vast area of western Japan, including Aki, Suo, and Nagato provinces. The museum showcases numerous precious materials that illuminate the family's history and culture. A must-see is the national treasure, the portrait of Kikkawa Motoharu. This portrait masterfully captures the dignity and imposing presence of Motoharu, a pivotal figure in the Kikkawa family's history.
The Kikkawa Historical Museum also exhibits weaponry and armor from the Sengoku period, books and paintings from the Edo period, and household goods that offer insight into the daily life of the Kikkawa family. These materials provide a deeper understanding of the family's rich history and culture.
The Kikkawa Historical Museum is an enjoyable museum for everyone, not just history buffs. Be sure to visit when you're in Iwakuni City.
