A tranquil place where you can feel the history of the Iwakuni Kikkawa clan.
Overview
The Kikkawa clan ruled the Iwakuni domain from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Meiji period. The Kikkawa Family Mausoleum, located right next to Iwakuni Castle, houses 51 graves of the clan heads and their families from the first lord, Hiroie, to the twelfth lord. The mausoleum is a serene space where you can feel the weight of history.
The Kikkawa Family Mausoleum is an essential site for understanding the history of the Iwakuni domain. You can also visit the "Owl Chozubachi" (a water basin shaped like an owl) located on the mountainside behind the mausoleum. It's said that the water basin got its name because of its owl-like shape.
The Kikkawa Family Mausoleum is a must-see when visiting Iwakuni. Why not spend some time in this tranquil space and immerse yourself in history?
