Oda no Hama Beach, located on Oshima Island in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, is renowned for its beautiful sandy beach and exceptionally clear water. It was once highly acclaimed, even earning a special selection (ranking 2nd nationally) in the Ministry of the Environment's "Best Bathing Beaches in Japan" selection. The Great East Japan Earthquake caused significant damage, including land subsidence, leaving the beach buried under debris and destroying its former beauty. However, thanks to the persistent cleanup efforts of local residents and volunteers from across Japan, the environment has been restored, and the beach was able to reopen in 2012, becoming the only beach in Miyagi Prefecture to do so that year.
The shallow waters and gentle waves of Oda no Hama Beach make it a safe and enjoyable place for families with young children. The island of Omae-mishima Island provides a windbreak, ensuring calm seas. In addition to swimming, visitors can enjoy various water sports, such as snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP).
The surrounding area offers many opportunities to explore Oshima Island's unique natural and historical attractions. These include Oshima Lighthouse, a historic lighthouse built in the Meiji era, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from its observation deck, and Oshima Shrine, a venerable shrine revered by the people of Oshima for generations, exuding a sacred and tranquil atmosphere.
Oda no Hama Beach is a place where you can experience both the beauty of nature and a touch of history. We highly recommend a visit.
