One of Japan's premier azalea mountains, boasting approximately 500,000 azaleas in full bloom from mid-to-late May.
Mount Tokusenjousan, located in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, is a 711-meter mountain renowned as one of Japan's premier azalea mountains. From mid-to-late May, around 500,000 Yamaazalea and Rengaazalea burst into bloom, transforming the mountain into a breathtaking crimson spectacle. The contrast of the vibrant red against the surrounding greenery is simply stunning; the crimson summit is visible even from distant plains. It's truly a magnificent work of art created by nature. On the Kesennuma side, a 15-minute walk from the trailhead leads to the First Observatory, offering an unparalleled vista of the seemingly endless expanse of azaleas in "Tsutsujiga-hara" (Azalea Plain). The Second Observatory provides a majestic panorama of azaleas and the deep blue Pacific Ocean. From the First Observatory, a 25-minute walk through the "Tsutsuji Kaido" (Azalea Street), a tunnel of azaleas taller than a person, takes you to the summit. Alternatively, approaching from the Honjiki side in the south, you can choose between a leisurely work road course or a ridge course offering a more challenging hike. Both routes take approximately 40 minutes to reach the summit. Mount Tokusenjousan caters to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced hikers. Enjoy an unforgettable mountain experience, immersing yourself in the beauty of nature while taking in the breathtaking views from the summit. We highly encourage you to visit!
