Prepare to be awestruck by the breathtaking scenery! Dominated by the 16-meter-tall Orishi rock and other uniquely shaped rocks formed by wave erosion.
Ogama Hanzo is a viewpoint showcasing the dramatic, rugged beauty of the rugged, masculine landscape of the Sanriku coast, characterized by its intricate, ria-style coastline and numerous oddly shaped rocks formed by wave erosion. The name "Ogama" (Giant Cauldron) is said to derive from the view from Maedahama Beach: looking out to sea, the area resembles a large cauldron of boiling water, with the offshore Hachiman Rock looking like a lid. Among these formations, Orishi is a representative feature of the Sanriku Recovery National Park. This 16-meter-high, 3-meter-wide marble column soars from the sea. It received its name because its tip broke off by about 2 meters during the Great Sanriku Earthquake and tsunami of 1896 (Meiji 29). Before the tsunami, it was known as "Tenchūiwa" (Celestial Pillar Rock). A paved walkway leads from the parking area to an observation deck offering panoramic views of Orishi and the surrounding coastline. From there, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the blue ocean, sky, and magnificent natural scenery. The area surrounding Ogama Hanzo is full of historical sites and natural wonders. For example, nearby is the Karakuwa Peninsula Marble Coast, designated as a national natural monument. This stunning coastline is characterized by white marble rocks and is sometimes called a "white sand beach." When visiting Ogama Hanzo, be sure to visit the Karakuwa Peninsula Marble Coast. Ogama Hanzo is the perfect place to connect with nature and unwind. Come and experience the power of nature!
