A must-visit for ukiyo-e enthusiasts! This museum boasts a precious collection of approximately 12,000 pieces.
The Ota Memorial Museum of Art, a privately-owned museum specializing in ukiyo-e, opened in January 1980, based on the collection of the fifth-generation Seizo Ota, a prominent figure in the business world. It houses an extensive collection of over 12,000 pieces, including approximately 500 original ukiyo-e paintings, about 10,000 ukiyo-e woodblock prints, and around 200 related books and antiques. Inspired by the serene Japanese-style exhibition environment Seizo Ota experienced at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the museum features a unique design. A rock garden is centrally located, and a slightly elevated tatami-mat room is situated in the back left corner. Visitors seated in this room can enjoy the original paintings displayed in the alcove, much like a traditional Japanese tea ceremony setting. The Ota Memorial Museum also holds twelve themed special exhibitions annually, changing monthly. These exhibitions showcase pieces from the museum's collection alongside borrowed works, offering a multifaceted view of the world of ukiyo-e. Recommended for those interested in the history, culture, and techniques of ukiyo-e, as well as first-time viewers. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the ukiyo-e world!
