The Lake Biwa Museum in Shiga Prefecture is one of the largest museums in Japan dedicated to the theme of Lake Biwa, which has a long history of 4 million years. It introduces the origin of Lake Biwa, more than 2,000 species of creatures living there, and the lives of people who have lived with the lake, from various perspectives. A highlight is one of the largest freshwater fish aquariums in Japan. You can observe rare freshwater fish from around the world, including the Biwa trout and 'honmoroko' (gnathopogon caerulescens), which are unique to Lake Biwa. There are also many exhibits where you can learn about the history and culture of Lake Biwa. You can experience the history of Lake Biwa through valuable materials such as restored models of 'Maruko-bune' (wooden cargo boat) and artifacts excavated from underwater ruins. There are also many hands-on exhibits, so children and adults can enjoy learning about Lake Biwa. Outdoors, there is a garden that recreates the nature of Lake Biwa and an area that recreates an ancient forest, where you can spend a relaxing time in nature. Rediscover the charm of Lake Biwa at the Lake Biwa Museum, where you can experience the nature, history, and culture of Lake Biwa all at once.
