Overview

Seigan-ji Temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple located on the western shore of Lake Biwa in Hieizan-Sakamoto. Founded in the Kamakura period, it has long been cherished by many literary figures and artists. The temple grounds feature beautiful gardens and historical structures, offering a tranquil atmosphere. The view overlooking Lake Biwa is particularly stunning, providing a relaxing space for rejuvenation. Seigan-ji Temple's founding dates back to the Kamakura period. Established as a branch temple of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei, it has since been beloved by numerous writers and artists, inspiring countless poems and haiku. Many stone monuments inscribed with these works remain on the temple grounds. The highlight of Seigan-ji Temple is undoubtedly its beautiful garden. Borrowing the scenery of Lake Biwa, the garden displays a different beauty in each season. Cherry blossoms abound in spring, lush greenery covers the trees in summer, autumn brings vibrant foliage, and winter offers stunning snowy landscapes. The temple grounds also feature numerous historical structures. The main hall showcases Kamakura-period architecture with the dignified presence of ancient wood. The mountain gate, built in the Edo period, speaks to the advanced craftsmanship of the time. Seigan-ji Temple is a haven of tranquility, perfect for rejuvenation while enjoying the magnificent view of Lake Biwa. It's also a popular power spot, attracting many visitors.
