Overview

Sakamoto Castle Ruins Park is a harmonious blend of history and nature, situated on the shores of Lake Biwa. Built in the 16th century by Akechi Mitsuhide, a prominent warlord of the Sengoku period, the castle fell after the Honnō-ji Incident. A statue of Akechi Mitsuhide stands in the park, allowing visitors to imagine the past. The park also offers breathtaking views of Lake Biwa and pleasant walking paths. Commissioned by Oda Nobunaga, Sakamoto Castle was built by Akechi Mitsuhide on the shores of Lake Biwa. However, it fell to Toyotomi Hideyoshi after the Honnō-ji Incident and was subsequently abandoned. Today, remnants of the castle, including stone walls and wells, remain in the park, evoking a sense of historical romance. Well-maintained walking paths allow visitors to enjoy the scenery of Lake Biwa. During cherry blossom season, the park is ablaze with color. Sakamoto Castle Ruins Park is perfect for history and nature enthusiasts alike. It's an ideal spot for those who want to relax, touch upon Sengoku-era history, and enjoy the magnificent views of Lake Biwa. Beyond Akechi Mitsuhide's statue, remnants such as stone walls and wells evoke a sense of historical romance. Nearby attractions include Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine and Enryaku-ji Temple, making for a fulfilling historical journey.
