A charming historical path lined with cobblestone streets, preserving the atmosphere of a traditional castle town.
The Nijoza Historical Path is located near Usuki Castle and retains the atmosphere of a former castle town. Created on a hill of tuff formed from solidified volcanic ash from Mount Aso, the path's history is palpable in the numerous sections where rock was carved away to create the roadway. Along the path, you'll find tall stone walls, heavy tiled roofs, white-walled buildings, and many temples—remnants of the town's once-bustling past, lining the slopes. The wet cobblestones after a rain shower are especially picturesque, creating a truly evocative scene. Several historical sites along the way will delight history buffs. For example, in front of the former Shinkoji Temple, you'll find "Kiridoshi," a representative view of Usuki, and its cobblestone path evokes images of samurai traversing it long ago. The Nijoza Historical Path is more than just a path; it's a valuable place to experience the history and culture of Usuki. Enjoy a leisurely stroll, imagine the lively atmosphere of the old castle town, and reflect on its rich history.
